BodyBest TMJ & Whiplash Newsletter:Vol. 051010

Delayed Temporomandibular Joint Pain and Dysfunction induced by Whiplash Trauma

Background: The Quebec Task Force on Whiplash-conducted a study designed to learn the shortterm and long term affects of TMJ pain and dysfunction caused by Whiplash trauma.

Methods: The authors studied 60 patients who had neck symptoms after whiplash trauma seen at a hospital emergency department. They followed up 59 subjects for one full year[1].

Results: The incidence of new symptoms of TMJ pain and dysfunction was five times higher one year following their whiplash injury. The frequency of TMJ pain increased 20 percent in female subjects who reported TMJ symptoms as their chief complaint.

Conclusions: The results documented that one in three people who are exposed to whiplash trauma is at risk of developing delayed TMJ symptoms that may require professional clinical management.

Clinical Implications: Awareness of a significant risk for delayed onset of TMJ symptoms after whiplash trauma is crucial in making adequate diagnoses, prognoses and medical-legal decisions.
